6 Things to Expect During a DOT Physical
Wanting a little more information on why a DOT physical is necessary if you are interested in operating a commercial motor vehicle? A physical is necessary because the results will determine whether or not you are healthy enough to operate a large vehicle. There is a lot of responsibility that comes with driving a large vehicle, and that is why the Department of Transportation requires anyone who wants a commercial driver’s license to first undergo a physical. The results from your physical will determine whether or not you meet the physical requirements.
Your DOT physical
There are certain procedures that one can expect to be performed when they are in need of a Department of Transportation physical so they can get their DOT medical card, which allows them to get their commercial driver’s license. Those applying should also expect to be asked many questions by the medical professional performing the physical, keeping in mind that all of their answers need to be as honest as possible or their medical card could be revoked.
The following is a list of six things that will happen during a DOT physical.
#1 – A vision test
Vision test requirements state that applicants must have a minimum of 20/40 acuity in each eye and a minimum of 70” peripheral in the horizontal meridian.
#2 – A hearing test
Hearing test requirements state that applicants must be able to hear a loud whisper at a distance of about five feet.
#3 – A urinalysis
A urinalysis will be given, which allows a medical professional to understand whether or not the applicant has any issues or conditions that can get in the way of their ability to be a safe driver.
#4 – A blood test
A blood test will be given, which can check for underlying health issues. A blood test will also check for any type of drugs that the applicant may have taken, as well as for alcohol.
#5 – A physical examination
A physical examination can only be performed by an FMCSA-certified medical examiner. The applicant will be examined from head to toe, allowing the medical examiner to understand their overall health profile.
#6 – A mental, behavioral health evaluation
A medical professional will ask about any mental disorders or behavioral issues the applicant may be dealing with or have been diagnosed with. If any existing issues are being addressed and the medical professional deems the applicant to be stable, then they have a good chance of passing this particular part of the physical.
